Year 4 | Winter 2018
In our society, sub-cultures often exist on the periphery of what is considered mainstream. But how do we define these categories?
Skateboarding culture, which has flourished globally, originated from everyday life. Traditionally, urban planning has focused on the needs of children and older adults, often neglecting the younger demographic. This has led to a scarcity of open spaces where young people can express themselves. As architects, we recognize the importance of designing inclusive public spaces that cater to all age groups, fostering a deeper understanding and integration of diverse cultures within our urban environments. This project aims to address this gap by creating spaces that celebrate and accommodate the vibrant energy of youth culture.
CONCEPT OF DESIGN
Skateboarding, as we know it, was born in the late 1940s and developed in California in the early 1950s. The spirit of skateboarding is freedom. The moves and tricks are not about winning, but about succeeding and doing it beautifully. As long as you have not yet succeeded, those successes are very meaningful.
Therefore, I hope to develop irregular and random lines in the presentation of space. The free spirit of skateboarding is a symbol that infects the surrounding environment.
USES
The original use of the building was mostly on the second floor, but people often go to the second floor for observation and other uses, so the second floor is a relatively open space.
RIVER
The Yanagawa River passes under the base, creating a cultural concept. The design gives an image of the first-floor space of the building with the river flowing under the blue ribbon.
VEGETATION
The main body of the original building is developed upward, and the base concept is extended so that people in the higher stories of the surrounding buildings can get a sense of the visual extension of greenery.
VISION
The holes are designed so that it is clear that something is being used underneath, but it is not possible to really understand the behaviour underneath, so you need to get closer to see and understand.
